How Do You Lose Fat? June 13, 2011.

Our weight is constantly fluctuating, mostly due to hydration. During any given day, we can fluctuate 3 to 5 pounds, morning to evening from water-weight alone.

So, how do you lose the FAT? What we do know is that fat is added on in layers called subcutaneous layers. You can compare these layers to an onion. As you begin to gain fat, you will put on weight in different areas. When you lose weight, however, you will see the difference first in the areas that you LAST gained weight in.

For example: I have gained twenty pounds. I first noticed the difference in my stomach, hips and then my arms. I sought help and began to lose weight. I lost the pounds in the following order: arms, hips and finally my stomach.

Men and women lose weight differently. Obese men tend to lose more visceral (internal) fat while obese women lose more subcutaneous fat.

Also, studies show that exercise seems to result in more subcutaneous fat loss while diet alone results in more visceral fat loss.

Our conclusion? Exercising a specific body part will NOT have any influence on local fat in that area. Instead, your best option is to understand how your body works. Set goals accordingly.
